WordPress .htaccess Generator and Basic Checker
Create a starter .htaccess file for a single-site WordPress installation on Apache. Set the installation path, add exact URL redirects, and keep custom rules outside the WordPress-managed section. The checker can also spot missing rewrite directives and several common configuration problems.
Check an existing file
Single-site WordPress on Apache only. Back up the existing file and retain host-specific rules. Nginx and WordPress Multisite need different configuration.
How to use .htaccess generator
- Confirm your host uses Apache with mod_rewrite and back up your existing .htaccess file.
- Enter the WordPress install path: / for the root or /blog/ for a subdirectory.
- Add optional exact redirects in the format /old-path https://example.com/new-path.
- Download the generated file, preserve any host-specific directives, and test it on staging before replacing the live file.
Questions and limits
Does this work on Nginx or WordPress Multisite?
No. Nginx uses server configuration rather than .htaccess, and Multisite has different rewrite requirements. This generator targets single-site WordPress on Apache.
Should I enable Force HTTPS behind Cloudflare?
Only enable the Apache rule when Apache itself sees HTTPS directly. Behind a CDN or reverse proxy, configure redirects with your host or provider to avoid loops.
Can I overwrite my existing file?
Review and back up the existing file first. Hosting, caching and security tools can add directives that this generator does not reproduce.
Is the checker a full syntax validator?
No. It checks common WordPress rewrite issues. Apache modules, virtual-host settings and other directives still need verification on your server.
